la Libération

Watercolor and newsprint on Arches
16" x 12" 2004

HAITI 29 April 2004

Translated from French.

Release is mud cookies? Rice farms decimated? It is illegal to remove the dying from the streets? Looting? The rum bar abandoned ... she sleeps in the sun enured to that taking place beyond the garden wall.

The kids were very drawn to this one of the burning car and the kid running away.
They asked me about it - but you know I looked at their open faces and did not want to explain yet another travesty so I told them it was your dream. Which is true in a way. I would swear you were there.

Hear no evil, see no evil--helmet and blinders included in the package deal--fat, over-fed lips, optional--
And the same sun shines on all of us--or so they tell us

el liberacion - este es la verdad sin las palabras

The donkeys bray all night long. Chickens scream. The VooDoo aka Dirty Hands, is so pervasive, your mind flies a thousand miles an hour. At the hotel bar, everyone is playing a Casablanca character. Mudslide mainstreets. No escape from the stench of rotting papaya. Nothing is what you think it is. In a faraway village with one lone streetlamp, the children squeeze together doing homework. In the terraced hills high above the sparkling sea, a horse limps with broken foot, no skin on foreleg.

Su, I am incredibly honored the children visited this place!

Nina,
They are incredibly honoured that you showcased their art. Thank you for that.

Their art is amazing to me, it is uncompromised. The battle adult artists always face is between what they see and what they think they see. Your children just see.

Jj, she's got hair rollers under her bathing cap.

Su, those are Deigo Rivera's leaves.

The bottom one says L.A. riots to me--close to home, yet not too close--some family's mini van on the way to Disney World shouldn't have gotten off there--

Hey wait, this wasn't in the brochure...........
